About Acceso:
Acceso (www.acceso.org) is a social enterprise that is revolutionizing food systems in Latin America and the Caribbean to put smallholder farmers first. Acceso’s mission is to create fundamental and lasting positive economic change in the lives of rural smallholder farming families. Our entrepreneurial model provides smallholder farmers with a sustainable way to participate in formalized markets, enabling them to work themselves out of poverty with dignity and to prosper. Acceso currently operates a portfolio of three social businesses in Colombia, Haiti and El Salvador and an agtech tool (Extensio) founded in Mexico. Across our agribusinesses, we have impacted nearly 35,000 smallholder farmers and farm workers, generating more than $80m in farmer income to date.
About the Role:
We are looking for an experienced writer to become an essential member of Acceso’s growing Business Development team. You will report directly to our Chief Development Officer and work in close partnership with our CEO to lead the proposal and report writing process. You will spearhead the writing and project management process for several complex writing projects at any given time, requiring dynamic prioritization. Professional writing experience is required, as well as business acumen and a background in project management; business development experience is highly desired but not essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage complex projects. You will oversee all stages of writing projects. You will establish workplans, coordinate input from multiple team members (gathering data and context from field teams, aligning budgets with the finance team, and editing drafts from more junior colleagues) and ensure error-free work.
- Write & edit proposals and reports. You will partner with the Chief Development Officer and Program leads to tailor writing to each donor through a collaborative drafting process, with a focus on clarity and responsiveness.
- Build Writing Engine. You will help develop Acceso’s writing team by creating the tools and systems needed to ensure efficient and timely proposal and report delivery, including the production of Acceso’s writing manual.
- Coach and Mentor. You will help build the writing skills of Business Development, Communications, and Program Team colleagues, instilling a writing culture that clearly communicates Acceso’s work with an emphasis on logical flow and jargon-free prose. This position will begin without direct reports but will develop into hiring and managing additional writers as Acceso’s team grows.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 8+ years of total professional experience, including 5+ years of relevant writing experience.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with country office staff and working with technical and business development teams under time pressure.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office products, particularly Word and SharePoint
- Demonstrated organizational and critical thinking skills.
- Genuine commitment to rural communities.
- English fluency is required and Spanish or French fluency is desired.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Complementary experience with both public and private funders, such USAID, Global Affairs Canada, foundations, and high net worth individuals.
- Understanding of the international development landscape, including funders and implementing partners.
- Experience providing training on proposal writing and other business development topics, including for non-native English speakers
Application Instructions:
To apply, please submit the form below/on our website with your CV/Resume, Cover Letter, and 2-3 writing samples that demonstrate your ability to draft readable prose: concise, structured into a logical flow of ideas, deriving power from simplicity rather than jargon. For your application to be considered, please submit all materials in English.
